The launch of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) highlights the challenges and limitations that a failure to address single ID solutions is having on the industry. Productivity improvements and accolades will swamp the organisation that can ultimately sort out this intractable problem. Driving home the issue are the recently released improvements to IE8 which include integration with social networking clients from within the IE8 browser. The new enabling function within IE8 is the Accelerator key which allows a user to launch a series of right-click add-ons designed to integrate various social computing interfaces such as Twitter, Linked In, Facebook, MySpace, and Digg, when web-site text is highlighted. While the integration of social functionality is welcomed, and the user experience certainly enhanced through a faster browser, the first round of offerings falls short of its potential.
