Settling on a balance between Windows and Linux in the data centre has increasingly enabled Australian enterprises to begin to rationalise not only their hardware but the target platforms for which they undertake development or deployment of commercial off the shelf applications. In 2009 Longhaus found that 49% of Australian firms indicated a move to Windows 7 at the desktop in 2010, and for just a moment it felt that local CIOs had ushered in a relative period of operating system market stability. Unfortunately such stability appears now to have been short lived, and the operating system debate is once again alive; even if the discussion has merely moved from servers and desktops to mobile internet devices (MID).
