While there is no doubt that virtualisation is a key technology foundation for more utility style ICT service delivery models its adoption remains at only 35% across Australian enterprises. For those who have adopted virtualisation another challenge is ensuring sufficient governance to avoid virtual server sprawl; if not addressed the number of “server” instances can easily rival its physical world equivalent thereby eroding the benefits of reduced management overhead. Although many CIOs feel that they must ensure their forward looking plans include the use of virtualisation, those organisations that have not yet invested directly in virtualisation will find themselves at cross-roads in 2010. Such companies will be left to ask “Should we invest in virtualisation or simply move to a fully managed private or public Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offering from the cloud?”
